Long-time Galbatron fans may remember Baroque, a very old Galbatron tune used approximately twenty-five years ago for Engine Software, a game developer that is still alive and kicking. The song started out as an experiment, with the main melody featuring only two notes. The question we ask ourselves in this theme is: what can we do with only two notes? The answer is: a lot.

Baroque is really Eppo’s pet project. Even though Loek is the original composer of the song, he had very little to do with this remake (besides offering some input and feedback).

Eppo says: “The main theme hits you straight in the face. The digital and warm analogue sounds are trying to reach a balance in the first part, only to be overthrown by a classic theme borrowed from J.S. Bach, which explains the track’s name.”

Galbatron wouldn’t be Galbatron however if they didn’t create an intermezzo with their beloved vocoders and… surprise, a trick they learnt from Nik Kershaw: vocal percussions.

“The fourth section can be considered as the finale, in which four synths are competing for a prize in the category Most Original Counterpoint. The song could go on forever if it wasn’t for the fade-out that makes you want to play this track over and over again”, adds Eppo.

Arranging this piece posed quite a challenge. The original composition never made it further than a compact cassette demo. Now, some 25 years later, we had to restyle the song using contemporary technology, but without losing the original strength of the theme. Finding the right sounds and creating a balanced mix took quite some dedication.

“I think about 60 mails were spent on the first 25 seconds of the track alone”, adds Eppo.

As usual, the cover of the song was designed by Aaron Bieber, who has been working with Galbatron from the very beginning. “I went with a sort of baroque theme and used the two notes of the main theme as the central idea. It's sort of... classical modern, which is how the piece sounds to me.”

On another (third) note, fans will be in for one more surprise this year, as Galbatron has also been working on a second project that should make old-time fans very happy. “We’re at 50% or so now, and the code name is S3”, Eppo whispers mysteriously.

But first: Baroque. What are you waiting for? Put your Bach wig on and enjoy the ride! Baroque is available now on CD Baby (; the tracks should be on iTunes in 2-3 days or so. Amazon and other sites will follow suit several days-weeks later.

Just got around to purchasing this one. Wow, this is great! I'm not familiar with the original, but this is a new favorite. I love the clavinet bass. It's like all my favorite Galbatron tracks rolled into one. Keep up the good work fellas!
